Researchers and clinicians have only recently started to explore how autism is experienced and expressed in mature adults. Our clinical experience of supporting autistic individuals over several decades has provided an opportunity for valuable longitudinal information. Research studies using extensive interviews with aging autistic individuals have provided new perspectives that are important for autistic individuals, their families and support services.
To increase understanding and awareness of abilities, well-being, identity and outlook on life of autistic adults over the age of 60.
To increase understanding and awareness of how the characteristics of autism can increase or decrease with aging and influential factors .
To increase understanding and awareness of changing support needs and information on autism for services for the elderly.
To increase understanding and awareness of protective and risk factors in physical and mental health.
