The association between autism and anxiety has long been recognised. We know that most autistic individuals experience daily problems with anxiety, which not only causes distress and decreases energy but also significantly impacts the person’s capacity across home, school, work and community settings. We provide an update on the latest research on autism and anxiety. Next, we discuss the biological, social and psychological factors that contribute to distress and/or disabling levels of anxiety. We describe how to support and accommodate an autistic person who is experiencing high levels of anxiety across school, home, community, and work settings. During the last section of the day, we present strategies to provide neurodiversity-affirming therapy for autistic individuals with anxiety disorders, including social anxiety disorder, generalised anxiety disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder, selective (situational) mutism, specific phobia, and post-traumatic stress disorder. Our course covers autism and anxiety across the lifespan.
