About This Course

Purpose

We created this event to strengthen participants’ capacity to deliver truly neurodiversity‑affirming practice across clinical, educational, and therapeutic settings. Drawing on the latest research, over 80 years of combined clinical experience, and Tony’s and Michelle’s lived experience, this course emphasises the central role of neuroprofiling - developing an attuned, granular understanding of each client’s neurotype, sensory system, learning and executive functioning profile, communication style, and regulation needs. Participants will learn how to adapt psychotherapy, counselling, speech therapy, occupational therapy, and other relevant health and wellbeing support to meet the needs of neurodivergent clients safely, respectfully, and effectively.

Purpose
Description

Neurodiversity‑affirming practice is a skilled, evidence‑informed, relational approach that recognises the legitimacy of neurodivergent ways of thinking, feeling, sensing, and communicating.

We begin by exploring neuroprofiling as a structured method to developing an individualised understanding of a client’s neurotype and support needs. This includes mapping sensory preferences, executive functioning patterns, communication styles, processing speed, social energy, regulation strategies, and environmental needs. Neuroprofiling supports therapists to develop a more individualised and contextualised understanding of the client, rather than viewing their experiences primarily through a deficit-based lens.

Next, we examine how individual neurodivergent characteristics and support needs may influence a person’s experience of and engagement with different therapy modalities. We describe how to modify your therapeutic approach to reduce cognitive load, increase safety, and support meaningful engagement. We explore pacing, language adaptations, sensory‑accessible environments, predictable session structures, and collaborative goal‑setting that respects autonomy and agency.

In the final section of the day, we present practical strategies for building neuroaffirming therapeutic relationships, supporting regulation, reducing shame, and avoiding common clinical pitfalls. We also discuss how to work effectively with families, schools, and multidisciplinary teams to create environments that support neurodivergent wellbeing.

Testimonials

What our attendees have said...

Great inclusive content compiled with an open mind. The fact that you include new research that you do not fully understand or agree with is a testament to your ongoing search for the betterment of life for the neurodivergent people.

This is valuable PD and I definitely recommend it. It was very clear, comprehensive and thought-provoking, and addressed many concerns related to inclusive education. The last section on neurotraits and accommodations was VERY helpful, thank you for that.

Thank you for advocating and bringing such a positive light to the neurodiverse community. I really appreciate the strength-based (not deficit-based) understanding of autism, and it resonates much better with my clinical and personal experience. It makes work within this community much more uplifting versus the negative feel of approaching it from the deficit-based/clinical model.

Thanks Tony and Michelle, as always, your sessions are so relatable, and jam-packed with the 'doable' -- hope that's a word (is now!) I am a mental health social worker and came to your session today to update my skills and get a new direction to how best support my clients - I work with survivor victims of family /sexual violence and was motivated to go beyond that ...looks like trauma, maybe ASD narrative - suspecting that there was a lot more going on that met the eye. So, you will be happy to know,I was jumping about today, having my own little eureka moments. eager to get back and share the message with colleagues and make our service more neuro-affirming - this session today was a game-changer.
