Parenting has been described to be the ‘hardest job in the world'. We agree with this statement, and we know that there are additional challenges to parenting when you are autistic, including sensory and emotional overload, emotion dysregulation (meltdowns and shutdowns), executive functioning challenges, intolerance of uncertainty, lack of control, perfectionism, how to socialize your kids, managing burnout and how to parent a neurotypical child. And we haven’t even mentioned the challenges of partners, siblings, extended family and the dynamics between family members. We describe the common challenges, and importantly how to lean on your neurodivergent strengths to navigate them.
