Although RSD is not a formally recognised diagnosis and research specifically examining it remains limited, some autistic people and people with ADHD find the term helpful in describing their experiences. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eDrawing on current research and clinical experience, we explore three potentially interacting areas that may help us understand rejection-related distress: \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cul\u003e\n\u003cli\u003e\n\u003cstrong\u003eRejection sensitivity: \u003c\/strong\u003eexpectations and experiences of rejection, criticism or exclusion. \u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003e\n\u003cstrong\u003eEmotion dysregulation:\u003c\/strong\u003e difficulties managing emotional responses and recovering from intense distress. \u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003e\n\u003cstrong\u003eTrauma:\u003c\/strong\u003e the possible influence of previous traumatic experiences, including those involving rejection, bullying or exclusion. \u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003c\/ul\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWe'll discuss how these experiences may interact and vary across childhood, adolescence and adulthood, while distinguishing established findings from emerging explanations. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWe'll also describe practical, neurodiversity-affirming approaches to supporting regulation, relationships and wellbeing.
